When I saw the original photo, in my minds eye I could see John Sheppard standing there staring at it in wonder. I debated about submitting it my manip to the SGAReversebang but decided against it and went with something else so I’m sharing it here now. (Of course, if anyone comes up with a ficlet to go with the picture, I’d be tickled pink.)

The most difficult part of being a first contact team is traveling to places only to discover they had long fallen to the Wraith. John almost preferred the worlds where the natives were hostile, where the people lived and scowled and - in John’s experience - chased them to the Stargate wielding bows and arrows. Those worlds lacked the stillness, the silence that came with cullings and explosions and the memory of smoke in the air, a phantom taste in John’s mouth.

John couldn’t stop looking at the overgrown ferris wheel. It was rusted, probably unable to actually turn any more, but he could almost hear the laughter of the people who used to ride on it. A relatively intact sign of the people who used to live here, even if nature was slowly taking it over; a people who valued entertainment enough to build something that had no purpose but fun.

He was good at compartmentalization, could set aside the knowledge of what had happened to these people. Once his report was written, John wouldn’t think about these people again, lost amongst so many others who suffered the same fate.

The ferris wheel, however, will stay with him.

I don’t often bat at my computer, trying to futilely flail the feels away, wailing Stop it stooop iiiiiittt! …but today I did.
